Jacinda Ardern has secured a second term after a dominant victory by the New Zealand Labour party. Her party has secured a parliamentary majority for the first time since electoral reforms in 1996.
The decisive nature of her victory gives the Labour party many new options moving forward. In previous years, they created a coalition with the Greens, but now Ms Ardern can choose whether to join with the Greens or not. Ardern is now in a position of great popularity and great power.
The future of New Zealand is looking incredibly bright. Ardern’s clear and compassionate messaging during the pandemic, combined with her professional crisis communication during multiple national disasters, has demonstrated her vulnerability and humanity while also highlighting her capacity to decisively get difficult tasks done. She has effectively united a nation, and that will undoubtedly lead to great success into the future.
Typically, election results can be very divisive and clear consequences can be found, however; I only see positive impacts coming from this result. Jacinda Ardern has proven herself beyond capable of leading New Zealand, and I can’t wait to see what she will achieve through this next term.
Now, all our eyes turn to the next election. Tuesday the 3rd of November. Trump of Biden?
But, until then, congratulations to Jacinda Ardern and the New Zealand Labour Party, you deserve it!
