Bernie Sanders. A 78-year-old man from Brooklyn who is currently leading the Democratic presidential race. He is overwhelming progressive, incredibly experienced and believes he can defeat Donald Trump in the November election. This is why I love Bernie Sanders, and this is a new article in a purely American politics series in the lead up to the 2020 election.
Bernie Sanders calls himself a democratic socialist. This means he does not support capitalism and want workers to control the means of production. However, unlike communists, democratic socialist believe that socialism should be achieved democratically. This progressive agenda aligns with my own political stance. I believe in social equality and that conservative governments favour the rich and neglect those who are struggling financially. Furthermore, we are lacking a strong, charismatic, progressive leader in our world. Bernie Sanders could be the answer.
Sanders policies focus on education and healthcare. These are fundamental components of society, and regarding education, especially, I believe all other facets of society are improved by a robust education framework. Bernie Sanders guarantees tuition and debt-free public colleges, universities and trade-schools to all. He plans to cancel all student loan debt for some 45 million Americans and end equity gaps in higher education attainment. These are great ideas, I’m not sure if they are financially viable, but they indeed demonstrate his desire to improve the education sector.
Now for some smaller policies which demonstrate why I love Bernie Sanders.
Banning the sale and distribution of assault weapons and prohibit high-capacity ammunition magazines. This also involves implementing a buyback program to get assault weapons off the streets. This is a great starting point in solving gun crime in America. Legalising marijuana in the first 100 days with executive action and ensuring the revenue from legal marijuana is reinvesting in communities hit hardest by the War on Drugs. This is a necessary change and provides a national standard for America regarding marijuana. You can read more of my beliefs on decriminalising drug use here – https://thelevinelowdown.com/2019/11/12/should-we-decriminalise-drug-use/
Implementing a foreign policy which focuses on democracy, human rights, diplomacy and peace, and economic fairness. America is a leader in foreign policy, and a peaceful approach could change the political landscape across key tension areas such as the Middle East. America’s involvements have led to some of the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe’s, there must be change.
So, do I think Bernie Sanders is the right man to lead America in the 2020s? I don’t have complete faith in his policies, his capacity to function consistently, and financial ability to pay for his ideas.
It is looking likely he will take on Donald Trump as a representative for the Democratic party. Will he succeed? What do you think? Could Bernie Sanders be the next President of the United States?
