I am excited to announce a brand-new series on the blog! This series will delve into an area which I am immensely passionate and invested in, sport. I believe that sport has a vital role within society and brings out the best in people. Let’s get started!
Top 5 Sporting Moments of the Week:
5. Aston Villa beat Leister City to progress into the EFL Cup Final
The EFL Cup, also known as the Carabao Cup, is often a forgotten trophy in English football. It doesn’t have the financial advantages of winning the league or the history of the FA Cup. However, Aston Villa has kept the Cup exciting, as they came from behind to beat Leister City in the 90th minute. This is a monumental moment for Aston Villa after an underwhelming season to date after being promoted from the English Championship last year. They will now play Manchester City in the final.
4. India beat New Zealand in TWO T20I Super Overs
T20 cricket is the most unpredictable sport in the world. Sometimes the games can be tedious, slow, and finish quickly. However, the series between India and New Zealand has been fast and intense. A super over occurs when it is a draw at the end of the match, an incredibly unlikely scenario. But, two super overs were completed during the week in two separate games, with India the victors in both.
3. Sofia Kenin wins her maiden Grand Slam against Garbine Muguruza in Australia
The 21-year-old American, Sofia Kenin, completed a perfect and breakout tournament by winning the Australia Open. After losing the first set, she did not panic but continued to trust her game and determination. She put her win down to self-belief, her confidence which has grown over the past few years as she has risen up the WTA rankings.
2. Damian Lillard extends his incredible run of form with a history-making performance
Damian Lillard has always been known as a clutch shooter and exceptional team player, but no one could have predicted his recent hot streak. After tearing down the Utah Jazz with 51 points, it puts his average over the last 6 games over 45 points and 10 assists. No one in the history of the NBA has acquired such numbers. His performances have put the Portland Trail Blazers back into the playoff picture, and with more performances like this, there might be a new team to watch out for in the Eastern Conference.
1. Max Purcell and Luke Saville reach the Australian Open Men’s Doubles Final
As an Australian, this sporting story took the number spot this week. Purcell and Saville began the tournament as unseeded wildcards, looking to see how far they could progress but with no expectations of success. It was a remarkable run from both men who are regulars on the Challenger circuit but are yet to break into the ATP tour. Although they lost the final, they will pocket a cool $380,000 prize money, an excellent reward for a great story.
Feature Article: Honouring Kobe Bryant
This week we lost a legend of basketball. A legend of sport. An incredible and inspiring person. The loss of Kobe Bryant has affected everyone. Whether long-term supporters of basketball or not, everyone knew Kobe Bryant. His legacy stretches much further than the Basketball court. He was involved in cinema, writing, many organisations and his beautiful family. I also want to send my prayers to the families and friends of the other people involved in the helicopter crash. A horrific situation.
Bryant’s athletic ability, his influence on the game, his devotion to his family and his service to charities will never be forgotten. He inspired a generation, through his on-court play and his off-court actions and words. He famously stated that “the most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do”. He achieved all of his goals and more. I pray for his grieving family that they can find peace and be able to move forward.
Kobe Bryant, thank you for everything. We will never forget you.
Next week in sport:
- Australian Open Men’s Final between Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem
- Super Bowl 54 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers
- UFC 247 headlined by Jon Jones and Dominick Reyes for the Light Heavyweight Championship
