Many people are referring to today’s events as the start of a possible world war. For now, nothing is certain except that more violence will occur.
United States President, Donald Trump, ordered the assassination of Iran’s most important military leader, Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani. The killing of General Suleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force, its elite security and intelligence unit, meets every definition of an act of war. However, its possible impacts are still to be seen.
This attack occurred due to reports made to Trump that Suleimani was planning significant action against US interests, with the potential to kill hundreds in Iraq and possibly more in the Middle East.
Interestingly, he has been a known figure for many years, but previous US presidents decided against killing him, fearing the potential repercussions in the Middle East.
Democrat presidential candidate, Joe Biden, accused Trump of “tossing a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox.” I couldn’t agree more with his statement. The Middle East has been on edge for several months now, tensions are high, and instability is present. Actions which incite violence and hatred leads to almost inevitable retaliation by Iran. The question now is when, how, or where will this retaliation occur.
The worst part of today’s events is that it sparks conflict. In a press conference, Trump stated that the assassination was to stop a war, not start a war. Unfortunately, President Trump hasn’t been reading his history books lately. This is the definition of an action which starts a war. He has committed a violent attack against another nation and further infuriated Iranians through his social media. He has no respect for his own people and has demonstrated complete ignorance regarding the impact of his actions.
The scary part for us all is that now the ball is in another court. It is in the hands of Iran. They will now decide what course this conflict will take, and that is a frightening prospect.
